When Busiswa applied for the internship with FunDza we were impressed by her creative cover letter that told us about her love of gazing at the stars.
In her words…
My name is Busiswa Mahonono. I would like to think that I was given the name because I was truly a blessing to my parents. I was always an only child, that is until my sister came along in 2012 and took my place as the favourite!
I graduated in Journalism in 2019 at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology. I will be furthering my studies this year doing my advanced diploma while working for FunDza. I live in the Northern Suburbs, a place I like to call a blank canvas because there are so many stories to be painted there.
I am a loner by nature so I like reading romance novels, stargazing every night all by myself. I wanted to work for FunDza for a long time because I like what they stand for: helping young people sharpen their writing and reading skills while also giving them the skills to do so. I guess 2019 was the year that I decided to just have faith in my abilities and apply.
I call myself a ‘village girl’ because that is what I really am, I would wake up before the rooster call, sit outside my house with a paper I stole from my Grandfather’s diary and with his favourite pen I would write till the sun sets. During that time, I taught myself how to read and speak English by watching cartoons and youth shows on television.
The first book that I have ever really read was The Calf of the November Cloud. Strangely I was fascinated by the titled, to this day I am (I don’t know why) but the story really stuck with me.This FunDza internship is an exciting opportunity that will help me enhance my writing and editing skills. I love that I get to read different stories from people with different views of the world. Life to me would be dull without storytellers, everyone is a storyteller because we all have stories to tell.
Welcome to the family, Busiswa. May your future with us be bright!
