The FunDza Literacy Trust and Cover2Cover Books celebrated International Literacy Day with readers from Vrygrond Library on Saturday 8 September.

FunDza – a nonprofit organisation dedicated to getting South African teens and young adults reading – donated 10 copies of Cover2Cover’s latest teen novel, Two-faced friends, to the Vrygrond Library.

The library had previously received copies of four other titles in the exciting Harmony High series as part of FunDza’s Popularising Reading programme.  The books are about the lives of a group of teens who attend a fictional township school, Harmony High.  Feedback from readers show these books are getting young people excited about reading.

The stories deal with many of the issues that teens face. Two-faced friends, by writer Dorothy Dyer, is about Lelethu who has arrived in Cape Town from the Eastern Cape. Fitting in is hard and, when some girls invite her to be part of their group, she’s over-joyed. But she finds that sometimes friends are not what they seem…

Many of the young readers from Vrygrond Library had already read other Harmony High titles. Nine of them entered a quiz to test their knowledge of the books. The two winners received their own copies of Two-faced friends and all participants received hot chocolate and scones courtesy of FunDza’s sponsor, NoMU.
