We’re delighted to welcome Amber Solomons to FunDza. She’s joining the FunDza team as a journalism intern till the end of year, and she’ll be writing blogs and articles, and editing and providing feedback to our Fanz writers. Here’s a little bit about Amber, in her own words…
***
My name is Amber Solomons. I’m 22 years old and I’m a journalism student at Cape Peninsula University of Technology. I live in the southern suburbs in Cape Town. My journey to FunDza actually started with me volunteering at FunDza in 2018. The time here was a fun and rewarding experience. I had the opportunity to edit some truly amazing stories and I got to write an article.
I’ve always loved to read and I used to read a book a day at times. I think that reading inspires, grows and nurture’s a person. Reading especially teaches people new and exciting things about the rest of the world. It in still’s the ability to imagine, to dream. As Jhumpa Lahiri would say, “That’s the thing about books. They let you travel without moving your feet.”
However, my passion for writing really only started during my senior year in high school and that is when I really decided that I’d like to become a writer someday. As part of my journalism course, I have to do an internship. I was lucky enough that FunDza gave me the opportunity to complete my internship here, and I believe that FunDza will help me grow in my journey to become a better writer.
I live with my wonderful parents, my younger brother and three little cousins. And as a writer I’d like to influence and inspire my family about the amazing benefits that reading has. I would love for my cousins to one day say that they love to read, as I do, and will thus pass it on to the next generation.
I enjoy the outdoors, especially long walks on the beach. I love meeting people from all walks of life and learning about different cultures.
Since my university campus is in town, I have the opportunity to explore a little after class. I love walking up to Bo-Kaap and surrounding myself with all that colour or even simply sitting in the Company Garden’s to get away from all the hustle and bustle. I’d love to travel someday and start a travel blog and share my stories with eager readers.
I’m sure that my time at FunDza will be fulfilling and that it will open many more doors.
