When Gift of the Givers asked us if we could supply them with flyers about FunDza to go out with food parcels, it got us thinking about how we could get other reading material to young people in lockdown… And that’s how ‘Soul Food from FunDza’ was born.

We took four pages of our latest funzine (see here) and compiled them into a broadsheet-sized double-page and double-sided spread, with stories, poems, writing activities and links on how to find FunDza online.

Our partner organization, the NACCCW (National Association of Child Care Workers) was very excited to hear that we had this material available for them to give out with their food parcels, as they are committed to integrate FunDza material into their programmes as they have seen how it supports and enriches their own pscyho-social work. (Read here about the beginning of our partnership with them).

A challenge was finding printers, as big printers are not classified as essential services, and so are not in operation. However, we managed to find some smaller photocopy printer services that were open and available to help us. We needed to find printers where the local branches of the NACCW could pick up the material with their essential services certificate, otherwise delivery to them would also have been a problem.

Currently, we are printing 10,000 for distribution in the Western Cape, and 10,000 for distribution in KZN.

FunDza has also released the pdf of the first edition of ‘Soul Food’ as a creative commons publication without commercial or derivation rights. This means that any group or person who wants to download and print copies is able to do so easily and cheaply.

Download the A3-formatted pdf here (for printing on A3 paper and folding in half to make a four A4-sized pages).
Download the A4-formatted pdf here (for printing on two A4 pages back-to-back and distributing that way)

Depending on feedback and need, this little bit of ‘Soul Food’ could be the first edition of a continuing series.
