Meet Kauthar! FunDza’s new intern. We asked Kauthar to introduce herself to us – who is she and why she wants to be at FunDza! This is her story:
***
My name is Kauthar Gool, a final-year Journalism student at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) who is currently completing her in-service training at FunDza Literacy Trust.
The reason I chose to do the practical part of my studies here, instead of a traditional newsroom, is my deep love of feature writing and aspirations of becoming a novelist.
A few of my favourite writers are: Nicholas Sparks, Rainbow Rowell, Meg Cabot and Katherine Ryan Hyde, to name but a few. I also enjoy reading plays, The Crucible and Macbeth being my two favourites.
Aside for my love of reading and writing, I’m also a really family orientated person. I have two younger siblings-both whom are currently out-growing me and whose ‘hand-me-ups’ I regularly steal- I love them dearly. Our age differences are so great (11 and 9 years) that I sometimes find myself playing ‘mommy-number-two’ to them when my mom is really busy or ill.
Cooking is a great hobby of mine, so is eating, much to the chagrin of my inner super model, aching to come out.
I may not be a perfect Muslim, but Islam is definitely something that defines who I am. I’m also a staunch supporter of the Free Palestine campaign and BDS.
I really enjoy public speaking, acting and reciting spoken-word on stage. I can be very shy and introverted, but seem to come alive on stage, exuding a confidence I never normally have. I love acting so much that I actually considered studying Drama at University, after getting accepted at the University of Stellenbosch for a Bachelor of Arts.

Thank you Kauthar, you’re a delight to have in the office! WELCOME!
