It’s amazing the amount of progress you get when people come together for one vision. This we saw at the Rosendaal Secondary School when we were invited to talk about the importance of literacy to the kids. The event was organised by LEMOSA (Learners Movement of South Africa), in conjunction with the school.
LEMOSA, an organisation based in Delft, was started by Asavela Peko, whom we came to know as an insightful and dedicated FunDza poet and writer. He participated in ‘Mentoring our Future Writers’ project in the Western Cape. When he recognised the change reading for pleasure brought to his life, he wanted to share it with his community.
This event brought together a number of organisations ready to impart information about their work to the learners. There were speakers from the SAPS, City of Cape Town, Sanparks, Parliament, Activate Leadership, Nal’ibali, Iziko Museum, Sanitary Pads Campaign, NYDA, and the Delft ward councillor. Each person/organisation was given a stall to display information. Learners could walk around, ask questions and get information. We were so happy to be part of this initiative.
The kids were happy that such an event took place in their school. One said that ‘nothing really ever happens to them.’ We are delighted to be part of the initiative, which would not have been possible without the support of the principal who sees the development of young minds as a top priority.
