In September FunDza hosted a competition for its readers – to help us find FunDza a theme tune and to celebrate reading through song! There were around a hundred competition entries and the judging task was tough. Many young people had put huge effort into their entries. We narrowed the pool down to a shortlist of ten tracks and – after a lot of playing, voting and debating – the judges decided on the winner and the two runners-up. Selections were made on the quality of the lyrics and the catchiness of the tune/beat as well as the execution of the final soundtrack.

Congratulations go to our winner, Christopher Themba, and to the two runners-up: Tshepo Sepadile and Fertile Soil, led by Bafana Welcome Leshela.

Runner-up: Tshepo Sepadile

The winner received R3000 in cash and a hamper of FunDza goodies. While the two runners-up each received R1000 in cash as well as gift hampers each.

Over the next couple of days we’ll be uploading some of the ‘commended entries’ which made it into the top 10 – so keep visiting our SoundCloud account for more.

Here’s what the top three had to say about being selected as a winner or runner-up:

“Education is the most powerful tool that we can use to combat poverty. These are the words of struggle hero Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela and I am in no position to contradict his message, I believe that education is the most powerful tool in combating any type of issue. Any good leader would have to know everything about the environment in which he or she governs, just in the same way that a judge in the court of law would have to know all the facts before making an action and a chef in the making would have to know the ingredients of a dish before getting anywhere near a stove. All these aspects need education and reading is the beginning of education. That’s why I feel honoured to have my entry for the “Sing it in a song, Rap it in a rhyme” competition be one of the winning entries. I’m glad I entered the competition, hope my entry inspires readers and writers and most of all I AM excited. Thank you Fundza!!”

“I am so happy and feel highly favoured. Thank you for believing in me. With this money I can improve my production music studio record, called TS Production, which specialises with music, drama, poetry and indigenous games. Thank you very much.”

Competitionn runner-up, Bafana Welcome Leshela of Fertile Soil

“I am very honoured and extremely happy to have been chosen as one of the winners. If there’s one thing that I have learnt from the competition is that, I should always believe in myself and use every opportunity I get. Thank you very much.”
