I jumped at the opportunity of attending the library opening for a couple of reasons. Firstly, I worked with Usasazo Secondary School before under a different organisation, so I came with a very positive mind-set as I really enjoyed my previous experience with the school. Secondly, it was my first time ever attending a library opening event. Thirdly, community/youth development is at the centre of my heart. Fourthly, and lastly, it was my first time attending a FunDza event as their new Beneficiary Liaison. This was an exciting experience: an opportunity to put faces to the people I’ve communicated with via email or telephonically.
When I arrived, with my FunDza t-shirt on, I was welcomed by learners (ushers) who escorted me to the venue of the main event. I was pleased to see a full house ¬– made up of teachers, other organisations and schools and, most importantly, the learners as they are the reason why we do what we do. I was not surprised at how organised the school was as this was conveyed in the speeches that took place on the day and of course my previous experience working with Usasazo Secondary School.
Introductions of all the attending organisations, sponsors, schools and school governing body were made. Just to mention a few names, others attending included: The Bookery, UCT’s SII unit, FunDza, Masiyile and more. Never have I been so proud to hear how highly people spoke of FunDza – pleased to be part of the FunDza family. I felt it as a warm welcome to my new role as Beneficiary Liaison. There were a number of items on the programme, including the school choir, which sang beautifully.
My favourite was Imbongi (Praise Poet) who really showed appreciation for the sponsorship of the library and touched on the impact the library will have for both learners and the school as a whole. Right after that, a music band treated us to the beautiful music of Nathi Mthethwa, pure talent at its best. The principal concluded the event with a ‘thank you’ that made everyone who had contributed to the library proud.
Lastly we were treated to refreshments at the library. I was amazed at the work done by all the organisations which had sponsored and assisted in the library. When introduced to the principal he said, “I want a FunDza corner at this library,” pointing at an empty corner upstairs. It’s always exciting when you see a group of dedicated people coming together for a common goal.
