June 4: Wellington Teacher Training College Workshop
Dorothy introduced teachers in training at the Wellington Teacher Training workshop to the wealth of content on offer at fundza.mobi and spoke to them about how to introduce the power of reading into the classroom.
June 6: Farewell party
FunDza said our sad farewells to Shelley Bolle, and interns Kate and Annie from the University of Kentucky.
June 8: SA Children’s Book Fair
Baeletsi, our FunDza facilitator in Gauteng, ran a writing workshop at the SA Children’s Book Fair in collaboration with Johannesburg City Libraries and Morris Issacson High School. The workshop, organised by eLearning Manager Jeff Nyoka, introduced learners to the fundza.mobi site, and inspired them to start seeing cyberspace as another ‘shelf at the library’ that they can use for their learning. At the event learners wrote short stories and one was selected for uploading to the fundza.mobi site.
June 9: ClassAct presentation with trainers
Dorothy went to Johannesburg to introduce trainers involved in a ClassAct project to FunDza’s body of literacy work.
June 14: Nal’ibali’s roundtable discussion on literacy
Zilungile, Dorothy and Mignon attended Nalibali’s roundtable discussion on reclaiming African languages in education. Zilungile was co-opted to the panel and ably spoke about the value of mother tongue education.
June 15: Guga S’thebe Youth Day Commemoration
Nandi, our Family Liaison Officer, attended this event to commemorate June 16 with learners and other NGO’s in Langa.
June 19: Activation at Ikamva Youth, Kuyasa
Nandi visited Ikamva Youth in Kuyasa to introduce the learners to fundza.mobi.
June 20: Community of Practice event
Nandi attended the Community of Practice event organised by The Learning Trust in partnership with the Western Cape After School Game Changer, that focused on innovation in sector.
June 22: Year Beyond Social Innovation Challenge
Dorothy attends Round 1 of the Social Innovation Challenge, at which YeBo volunteers present their ideas on combatting literacy in their communities.
June 25: Writing Workshops at Ikamva Youth, Gugulethu
Sonja and Ndibulele go to Ikamva Youth in Gugulethu to host a Writing Good Essays workshop and a Creative Me workshop as part of the Winter School programme.
June 26: Writing Workshop at Harry Gwala school, Khayelitsha
Sonja and Refilwehape go to Harry Gwala Secondary School in Khayelitsha to run a Writing Good Essays workshop.
June 26: LIASA Conference
Boitumelo Erasmus – Cover2Cover’s Marketing Officer – represents FunDza at the LIASA Conference, giving attendees an overview of all the content available on fundza.mobi.
June 26: Zilungile speaks to Radio Overberg 101.8 fm between 08:00 pm – 09:00pm and unpacks the importance of having skills development programmes for young people post matric with Dj Sk and LadyK as the hosts.
June 29: Child Protection Act training
