FunDza is very excited to have our first short story anthology: Big Ups! Vol 1. in print.
The title Big Ups! comes from our FunDza Fanz, who regularly post the comment: Big Ups to the Author! after reading one of FunDza’s weekly short stories on their cellphones.
Big Ups! Vol 1 is a selection of eight of the most popular, and best short stories, from our FunDza mobi network. As well as including stories from some of SA’s and Botswana’s most accomplished writers of teen fiction, the collection also showcases young South African writing talent, such as Never Again, by upcoming young author, Sonwabiso Ngcowa. It is a moving account of growing up in rural Eastern Cape, and the challenges of relationships within a family.
The anthology also includes stories by: Jenny Robson, Courage Like a Lion, about train-surfing; Lauri Kubuitsile, The Good Girl, about a teacher who abuses his learners during ‘extra lessons’. Stubborn Love by Tracey Farren, The Big Crush by Cynthia Jele, about a girl’s struggle to fit in at school; Trust by Agnes Kimberley, about a teen trying to come to terms with her parents’ divorce; Dreamgirl, by Michelle Faure; and Secret Enemy, a story on cyber-bullying, by Julie Barker.
FunDza now has more than 350 000 registered users who collectively read more than 45 000 hours a month – showing the impact our stories are having on teens and young adults. They’re reading for pleasure every day!
Now the organisations in our popularising reading programme, (some of whom don’t have mobi-access) can enjoy these fabulous stories in print for the first time.
