We recently started a FunDza community of readers on WhatsApp. The interaction with our readers has lead to much laughter in the office, ‘oohs!’, ‘ ahs!’ and ‘How sweet is that?’. It is helping us to understand the reach of the work that we do and it keeps us connected with our audience. It was natural to contact Anzani Tshivhase to find out more about her, when she sent us this message on WhatsApp:

“I was teaching for Grade R and 1. Some they are ECD assignments that have to write a book and rhymes so I found those things here on FunDza reading. And I used some children story to tell little one story and they like them so much so I thank your site for dat coz next month I’m graduating and it’s all because of u guys.”

Anzani, originally from the Thohoyandou area in Limpopo, was studying Early Childhood Development through Unisa and one of her assignments involved working at an ECD centre or crèche. She ended up at Dinoko Day Care crèche in Olievenhoutbosch Ext 36 in Gauteng, where she spent three weeks teaching Grade R and 1’s.

She submitted a report of her time there which included her experiences of reading stories from FunDza to the children. She used her phone in the classroom and was reading the children’s stories through Mxit. FunDza publishes a new children’s story each week on its site, Mxit app, and FunDzApp (it’s Android app).

After her graduation next month, she says that she’s planning to study nursing, not only because she loves people both young and old, but also to increase her chances of finding work in the long run. When asked whether she still reads, she says that she reads FunDza stories to the children at home so that they do not become bored. And she reads stories for herself on FunDza for the same reason.

We wish Anzani all the best after her graduation next month and we are happy to have played a part in this.
