SM 5FunDza has been asked to come back to the False Bay College Fish Hoek Campus for another year of wowing the students with stories and activities that help dispel the myth that reading is boring! Thanks to the success of the Reading for Enjoyment campaign last year, we were approached by the Khayelitsha campus of False Bay College to run a similar campaign there this year too. We look forward to working with them this year.

In the first session at Fish Hoek we introduced ourselves and the reading campaign to the students, most of whom were new to the college. We encouraged the students to read on our mobi site,  join FunDza on Mxit, download FunDza’s Android app FunDzApp, connect with us via Free Basics (where people can read for free if they’re on the Cell C network) or join us on social media. We also chatted to them about all the different benefits of reading… and most importantly that it can be fun and entertaining.

As the first main exercise, we read a short section of The Playa out loud to the students and, just when they were hooked into the story, stopped. The students were then put into small groups and asked to come up with ideas on what they thought could happen next. When they’d done this we carried on reading the rest of the story. Because the students had had to write about the two characters – Siphelo and Nqabisa – they were able to relate better to the story and were more curious to find out what does actually happen in the end.

The students stories can be read here.
