Join FunDza in celebrating World Literacy Day by encouraging your class or reading group to participate in this activity.

Read the short story Dreamgirl. Here are the three ways that you can access the story.

You can read the story out loud to the group, or you can get the group to take it in turns to read the story, whatever works best. Once you’ve read the story then introduce some discussion around the story.

Here are some ideas for discussion questions:

1. Would you like Thandi as a friend? Why/why not?
2. Why did Thandi’s sister, Nomsa, not want to see the truth about Themba?
3. Do you think Dreamgirl is a good title for this story? Why/why not?
4. Do you know young men like Themba? How can society encourage young men like him to treat girls with respect?
5. What are some of your dreams? What are some of your obstacles to overcoming them?

You can also give small prizes to people in your group who are able to answer contextual questions correctly.

Here are some ideas for the questions:
1. What was the name of Thandi’s nephew / Nomsa’s baby? (Answer: Avile)
2. How old was Thandi? (Answer: 16)
3. What kind of job had Themba had when he and Nomsa started going out? (Answer: Pizza delivery man for Mr Delivery)
4. Where was Thandi’s mother? (Answer: working for a family in the suburbs – she would sleep-in, so wasn’t always at home)
5. Why was Thandi worried about Themba being around all the time? (Answer: He was paying her too much attention, in a very sexual way and it was making her very uncomfortable.)
6. What did Thandi’s mom bring home for her that caused Nomsa to get upset or jealous? (Answer: Scholarship forms for entry to an expensive school in the suburbs)
